He's Back! Tiger Woods Will Return at the Masters

Tiger Woods announced today on his website that he will return to golf at the Masters.

The statement in full:

"The Masters is where I won my first major, and I view this tournament with great respect. After a long and necessary time away from the game, I feel like I'm ready to start my season at Augusta.

"The major championships have always been a special focus in my career and, as a professional, I think Augusta is where I need to be, even though it's been awhile since I last played.

"I have undergone almost two months of inpatient therapy, and I am continuing my treatment. Although I'm returning to competition, I still have a lot of work to do in my personal life.

"When I finally got into a position to think about competitive golf again, it became apparent to me that the Masters would be the earliest I could play. I called both Joe Lewis and Arnold Palmer and expressed my regrets for not attending the Tavistock Cup and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. I again want to thank them both for their support and their understanding. Those are fantastic tournaments, and I look forward to competing in them again.

"I would also like to thank the Augusta National members and staff for their support. I have deep appreciation for everything that they do to create a wonderful event for the benefit of the game."

Yeah, it matters

It’s a little funny that just a few days it was written that it didn’t matter when Tiger was coming back, but the second he does, it’s top news. Of course it matters that he’s returning now! Now he’s going to be here for the heart of the golf season. That effects ratings, fans, and most importantly, it affects Tiger’s standing as a national punchline or as a golfer.

You missed the point of the article. It didn’t matter when Tiger came back because the reaction would be the same – the one we’re getting now.

Hummm... Is Tiger Working on...

… a prepared statement with Ari for when he wins the Masters?

The Jim Nance “interview” in the Butler Cabin goes beyond awkward… Is that even possible?

I predicted this all along — and was right.

Tiger is going to return to golf in the most restrictive and controlled environment in the game — The Masters at Augusta National. He is doing so undoubtedly to tamp down the circus that will inevitably accompany his return to work, and in a place where if a fan gets out of line they can lose the privilege of returning to the tournament grounds for life. The press is under much the same threat — if the Men of the Masters don’t like you and decide you’re out, you’re out, no questions asked. Ask Gary McCord if you don’t believe me.

Coming from someone who controls every possible circumstance to the point of his life seemingly scripted, this is not a surprise. It only makes sense.

What will be interesting is when Tiger chooses to come back and play a non-major tournament. Will it be Quail Hollow, or one tied into a sponsor or the World Golf Championships? That’s where he will face folks under less restrictive and possibly more hostile conditions, at least from the inevitable one or two drunken louts that seem to always enough liquor in them to give themselves the courage to be stupid and yell something crass.
